About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The "Proceedings of the MEi:CogSci Conference" is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal, providing a quality platform for original work by students/participants from all partner universities of the international Middle European interdisciplinary master's programme in Cognitive Science (https://www.meicogsci.eu/). All submissions to this journal are extended abstracts, submitted alongside either a poster or oral presentation for the MEi:CogSci Conference.

Articles range across the entire scope of cognitive science, touching on aspects of anthropology, artificial intelligence, economics, education science, linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, and psychology. The journal provides a platform for interaction between young cognitive scientists with backgrounds in these fields, as well as others ranging from fine arts, economy, to engineering and maths. As a result, the journal publishes in all areas of cognitive science, covering a wide range of phenomena and offering a heterogeneous set of methodologies.

Peer Review Process

Peer review is a core aspect of quality and integrity in scientific work. As a result, the Proceedings of the Middle European Masters in Cognitive Science (MEi:CogSci) Conference places a high value on constructive feedback at all stages of the submission. At its best, peer review encourages authors to submit quality work and allows them to improve it in response to informed and attentive feedback.

Submissions to this journal are typically reviewed by three referees, two of whom are fellow authors and one of whom is a senior member/scientist of the MEi:CogSci Community at one of the partner universities. This journal accomplishes a swift review process in the month prior to the conference, going from initial submission to final decision in around four weeks. During this time, authors receive an opportunity to revise and resubmit their submission after an initial round of peer review.

The criteria for judging submissions include originality, interdisciplinarity and accessibility and general comprehensibility. On the other hand, referees are also asked to comment on the text as such, including its formal aspects, such as a conventional form of submitted abstracts, and the use of appropriate language. Throughout, reviewers are encouraged to focus on the research topic and to be mindful of the soundness of the argument being presented.

Publication Frequency

Proccedings of the MEi:CogSci Conference is published anually. All submissions from the current year are collected and published in a single issue following the MEi:CogSci Conference.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

On the one hand, the programme offers training in basic and advanced disciplinary and methodological courses. On the other hand, MEi:CogSci allows students to investigate a cognitive phenomenon of their interest from different perspectives, thereby gaining expertise in theories and methods from multiple disciplines. In general, MEi:CogSci Vienna is marked by a vibrant learning and research environment with collaborations across universities and institutions in and around Vienna.
